The Long Cosmos [book, audiobook]

The Long Cosmos [book, audiobook]

THIS IS THE LAST BOOK IN THE SERIES. IT ALSO CAME OUT AFTER THE DEATH OF PRATCHET. I FEEL LIKE THAT COLORED THE BOOK A LOT, THE BOOK IS SO MUCH ABOUT EVERYONE BEING OLD AND EVERYTHING DYING. IT ALSO HAD A TON OR ARTHER C CLARK CALL OUT STUFF AND THAT WAS ANOTHER AUTHOR BAXTER WORKED WITH WHO DIED, SO THE BOOK FELT A LITTLE MEMORIAL. HOWEVER, WITHOUT A CO-WRITER AND BAXTER LEFT ALONE LIKE A QUARTER OF THE FINAL CLIMACTIC BOOK ENDED UP BEING JUST A DESCRIPTION OF HOW A FICTIONAL TREE FUNCTIONED. AND EVERY SINGLE FANTASTICAL ELEMENT PRATCHET ADDED ENDED UP IN SOME "ACTUALLY THAT WAS ALL FAKE AND WAS A STORY PLANTED TO SEND A SECRET MESSAGE" WHICH IS HILARIOUS. BAXTER CAN NOT STOP BEING BAXTER.

I DON'T KNOW, I REALLY DID LIKE THIS WHOLE SERIES BUT IT DOES KINDA FEEL LIKE IT NEVER QUITE KNEW WHAT TO BE. LIKE IT SORT OF HINTED AT TRYING TO BE SOME DOCTOR WHO ESQ MONSTER OF THE WEEK WHERE THEY STEP INTO A NEW WORLD AND FACE A NEW PROBLEM THEN LEAVE AT THE END, AND IT HINTED AT BEING A FUTURE HISTORY OF THE HUMAN RACE OVER THE VERY WELL THOUGHT OUT 'LONG EARTH' BUT IT KINDA NEVER REALLY SETTLED ON ANYTHING AND IT WAS KINDA JUST 5 BOOKS WHERE STUFF JUST KINDA HAPPENED WITH NO REAL NARRATIVE ARC. LIKE IT REALLY NEVER JUSTIFIED THE LONG COSMOS AS MORE SPECIAL THAN JUST THE LONG EARTH ALREADY WAS. IT WASN'T MUCH OF A CLIMAX AND IT DROPPED A LOT OF MORE INTERESTING THINGS TO GET THERE. LIKE THE BOOK SHOULD HAVE GONE WITH STUFF LIKE THE SINGERS AND THE WEIRD POLYMARRAGE STUFF.

PS. ON THE OTHER HAND MAKING THE WHOLE 5 BOOKS A BIG SHAGGY DOG STORY TO EXPLAIN THE ORIGIN OF THE LIBRARIAN FROM THE DISKWORLD BOOKS IS AMAZING, HOLY CRAP.
