The Quarry [book, audiobook]
The Quarry [book, audiobook]
I DID 'TWO BOOKS BY THE SAME AUTHOR" AS "FIRST AND LAST BOOK BY AN AUTHOR", WHICH WOULD BE A GOOD CATEGORY. IT'S ESPECIALLY INTERESTING HERE, AS IAN BANKS WROTE ALMOST ENTIRELY EXTREMELY BIG SCALE POST SINGULARITY SCI-FI STUFF THROUGH HIS CAREER BUT HIS FIRST AND LAST BOOK ARE BOTH SIMILAR IN THAT THEY ARE JUST FOLLOWING A VERY SMART TEEN WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES (WASP FACTORY: CARTOONISH EDGE LORD PSYCHOPATH/THIS: A TEEN WITH REALISTIC HIGH FUNCTIONING AUTISM) WALKING AROUND A SECLUDED RURAL HOUSE WITH THEIR BAD DAD. IT'S SAD THOUGH, THE DAD IN THIS IS DYING OF CANCER AND IAN BANKS FOUND OUT HE WAS DYING OF CANCER AND THE DAD IS SO IMPOSSIBLY BITTER IT OVERSHADOWS A LOT OF THE STORY, WHICH FEELS LIKE AUTHOR SELF INSERT. IN GENERAL THOUGH IT'S SO FUNNY HOW MUCH THIS STORY LINE WOULD BE SOMETHING YOU'D EXPECT AT A LOCAL THEATER PLAY MORE THAN MOST OF WHAT HE WROTE WHICH WAS LIKE, A BILLION SPACESHIPS BRAIN DOWNLOAD TEN TRILLION YEARS.
PS. THE BEST PART OF THIS BOOK IS THERE IS A FEW TIMES THE KID MENTIONS SOME NERDY MEDIA HE LIKES OR EXPLAINS THE STORY AND IT'S ALL THAT SORT OF LAME OFF BRAND KNOCKOFF TYPE STUFF. LIKE A THING HE LIKES IS PEOPLE BEING ASLEEP IN A VIRTUAL WORLD AND A KUNG FOO HERO HAVING TO FIGHT THE MACHINES AND IT'S JUST CLEARLY KNOCK OFF MATRIX FOR THE BOOK, BUT THEN LIKE A PAGE LATER HE'S LIKE "OH YEAH, THIS GOT SUED BY THE MATRIX FOR COPYING THE STORY" AND THEY DO IT AGAIN WITH HIS FAKE MMO, WHERE HE MENTIONS HE LISTS THE REAL ONES HE PLAYED TOO.
