A Kind of Spark [book]
A Kind of Spark [book]
THIS BOOK IS REALLY SHOCKINGLY WELL DONE. IT'S A BOOK ABOUT AN 11 YEAR OLD AUTISTIC SCOTTISH GIRL AND THE WHOLE BOOK IS MORE OR LESS JUST EVERYONE BEING SO SHITTY TO HER NONSTOP, IT DOES SUCH A GOOD JOB ABOUT IT. IT'S SO AUTHENTIC ABOUT THE SORT OF AWFUL REAL PEOPLE WOULD BE, INSTEAD OF JUST BEING CARTOON BULLYS. LIKE I'M USING IT AS A "BOOK ABOUT A TEACHER" BECAUSE SUCH A MAJOR POINT IS HOW EXTREMELY EXTREMELY HORRIBLE AND UNFAIR THE TEACHER IS, AND IT'S LIKE, SPOT ON EXACTLY A REAL SEEMING TEACHER NO ONE WOULD EVER THINK TWICE OF AS A VILLAIN AND IT JUST DOES SUCH A GREAT JOB SHOWING HOW HORRIBLE THEY ARE. IT'S SUCH A WILDLY SYMPATHETIC BOOK TO THE CHARACTER.
PS. I DON'T EVEN REALLY KNOW HOW INTENTIONAL IT EVEN WAS, BUT THE CHARACTER HAS AN AUTISTIC OLDER SISTER AND FOR THE FIRST HALF OF THE BOOK THE CHARACTER'S FUNCTION IS THE YOUNGER SISTER DOES SOMETHING, THE THE OLDER SISTER DOES SOME AUTISIM EXPLAINER THING WHERE THE BOOK KINDA SHOEHORNS A DEFINITION IN WHERE THE SISTER IS SAYING IT, BUT IT'S CLEARLY FOR THE READER. THE MAIN PLOT OF THE BOOK IS THE YOUNGER SISTER HEARING A STORY IN SCHOOL OF HOW THE TOWN HUNG SOME WITCHES HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO AND IT BEING TOLD AS A FUNNY CHARMING STORY, AND HER IMAGINING ONE OF THE "WITCHES" BEING ACCUSED OF BEING DIFFERENT AND BEING KILLED UNABLE TO EXPLAIN OR DEFEND HERSELF. THEN THERE IS A STORY OF AN OLDER GIRL, WHO GOT OVERWELMED TOO MUCH AT SCHOOL, AND EVENTUALLY WAS TAKEN OUT OF CLASS AND THEN GREW UP A WARD OF THE STATE WITHOUT RIGHTS OR FREEDOM, AND THE YOUNGER SISTER SEES HER AS IDENTICAL TO HOW THE WITCHES WERE TREATED, THEN PEOPLE ARE SAYING IT'S NOT THE SAME, AND LIKE, KNOWING HOW BOOKS ARE, AND HOW THE CHARACTER IS BEING USED AS METATEXTUAL EXPLAINER IT FEELS LIKE THE SISTER IS GOING TO GO INTO SOME 'WELL YOU SEE, SOME DISABLED PEOPLE NEED EXTRA HELP, SOME PEOPLE ARE WORKING FOR BETTER TREATMENT, ETC" BUT THERE WAS JUST SOMETHING ABOUT HOW WELL WRITTEN THAT MOMENT IS WHERE THEN THEY USE THE SORT OF VOICE OF FACTUAL TRUTH CHARACTER TO JUST SAY "IT IS THE SAME" THEN THAT'S IT, IT'S A DIFFERENT SCENE AFTER THAT, END OF STORY. IT FELT SHOCKINGLY STRAIGHTFOWARD AND NO PUNCHES PULLED FOR A KID'S BOOK.
