A Song for a New Day [book, audiobook]
HOOOOLY CRAP. I TALK UP THE NEBULA AWARDS BUT GOOD GOD. THIS IS THE 2019 NEBULA AWARD, RELEASED SEPTEMBER 2019. IT'S A NEAR FUTURE FICTION WHERE THE CONCEPT IS THAT AFTER A SERIES OF PUBLIC SHOOTINGS AND BOMBINGS AND SEVERAL YEARS OF SERIOUS PANDEMIC THAT SOCIETY JUST OUTLAWED MOST PUBLIC GATHERINGS. AND IT'S LARGELY SET 10 YEARS IN FOLLOWING AN AGORAPHOBIC WOMAN THAT GREW UP HOMESCHOOLED IN A SMALL TOWN AND A ROCK STAR THAT HAPPENED TO BE THE LAST CONCERT HELD THE NIGHT OF A 9/11 STYLE BOMBING THAT MARKED THE LAST LARGE PUBLIC CONCERT BEFORE THINGS GOT SHUT DOWN. AND I LOVE IT, IT'S SUCH A SMALL STORY, THE WORLD IS PRETTY CLEARLY CRAPSACK BUT THERE ISN'T REALLY INDICATION THAT IT'S A DYSTOPIAN TOTALITARIAN GOVERNMENT OR ANYTHING, AND THE MUSIC COMPANIES SUCK BUT ROUGHLY IN LINE WITH HOW MUCH THEY REALLY SUCK, AND THEY NEVER REALLY OVERTHROW ANYTHING. IT'S JUST A REALLY SMALL STORY WITH ONLY LITTLE CHANGES AND THE MESSAGE KINDA SETTLES ON "RECORDED MUSIC IS GOOD, BUT SO IS LIVE MUSIC, AND TOO MANY RESTRICTIONS ARE BAD, BUT SOME ARE GOOD".
PS. LIKE OVER THE NEXT TEN YEARS EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF SCI-FI IS GOING TO BE TEDIOUS "BUT WHAT IF WE WERE IN QUARANTINE BUT LIKE, *ALIENS*" BUT THIS WAS WRITTEN RIGHT BEFORE AND IT GOT WRITTEN BY CLEAR EYES THINKING ABOUT OUR REAL WORLD AS SCI-FI AND TELLING THIS TINY STORY AND IT'S GREAT.
