Gun, with Occasional Music [book. audiobook]

Gun, with Occasional Music [book. audiobook]

THIS BOOKS MAKES ME FURIOUS. IT'S NOT BAD OR ANYTHING. IT'S A PERFECTLY GOOD BOOK, BUT LIKE, IT'S A BOOK THAT SETS UP A BIG HIGH CONCEPT PREMISE THEN TOTALLY IGNORES IT. IT'S A NOIR DETECTIVE STORY SET IN A FUTURE WHERE ASKING QUESTIONS IS ILLEGAL AND TABOO. YOU KNOW, A REALLY GOOD CONCEPT FOR AN INTERESTING DETECTIVE STORY. BUT INSTANTLY IT'S SHOWN THAT THE MAIN CHARACTER HAS A QUESTION ASKING LICENCE AND THAT THERE IS A BUNCH OF UNDERCLASS ANIMAL PEOPLE AROUND THAT THE TABOO DOESN'T APPLY TO SO IT BASICALLY NEVER IS IMPORTANT. THE LAST QUARTER OF THE BOOK ALSO MOVES TO A SETTING WHERE REMEMBERING THINGS IS BECOMING ILLEGAL AND AGAIN THAT IS A REALLY GOOD SETTING FOR A REALLY INTERESTING DETECTIVE STORY BUT AGAIN THEY BASICALLY NEVER INTERACT WITH THAT. IT'S NOT EVEN A BAD BOOK, I LIKED IT A LOT, BUT MAN, WHY HAVE THESE PREMISES?

PS. I AM MAKING A LITTLE BIT OF A THIN CONNECTION TO PICK THIS AS THE BOOK INVOLVING MUSIC, IT WAS MOSTLY THE TITLE BUT IN THE STORY MANY OBJECTS PLAY MUSIC, SO IT COUNTS. I ACTUALLY FEEL LIKE I NEVER REALLY GOT THE PREMISE FOR THINGS PLAYING MUSIC. I GUESS IT WAS THE WORLD BEING DUMBED DOWN AND RANDOM THINGS LIKE GUNS AND WALLETS PLAYING A LITTLE TUNE IS INFANTALIZING BUT I KINDA THINK IT'S THAT THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN IN 1994 AND BEING MAD OBJECTS WERE PLAYING LITTLE AUDIO TONES WAS PROBABLY A THING I AND EVERYONE ELSE HAS FORGOTTEN ABOUT THAT FELT TOPICAL AT THE TIME.
