I Keep My Exoskeletons to Myself [book, audiobook]
YEAH, THIS BOOK IS PRETTY GOOD. I LOVE IT HAS A SUPER HIGH CONCEPT PREMISE (IN A NEAR FUTURE DYSTOPIAN AMERICA PEOPLE ARE GIVEN EXTRA SHADOWS AS PUNISHMENT) THEN ALMOST ZERO PERCENT OF THE BOOK IS EVER DIRECTLY ABOUT THAT AND THE BOOK REFUSES TO EVER TALK ABOUT A SINGLE MECHANIC OF ANYTHING ABOUT THAT IN ANY SCI-FI WAY. SO IT'S MOSTLY JUST A BOOK ABOUT ALIENATION AND GRIEF. I ALSO LIKE THAT THE BOOK DOES A GOOD JOB OF HAVING THE SHADOW STUFF STAND IN FOR A BUNCH OF THINGS BUT REFUSES VERY HARD TO MAKE IT A STRAIGHT ANALOGY FOR ANY ONE THING. BUT THEN EVEN WITHOUT IT REPRESENTING ANY ONE EXACT SPECIFIC THING GETS IT EXACTLY SPOT ON THE WAY GRADE SCHOOL TEACHERS WOULD BE AWFUL ABOUT IT.
PS. I DON'T KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT HOW HORNY THIS BOOK IS. A MAJOR THEME OF THIS BOOK IS SHAME AND THE MAIN CHARACTER IS A LESBIAN AND ANTI LGBT LAWS WAS CLEARLY ONE OF THE ALLEGORIES AND I THINK THE PREMISE OF SO MANY GRAPHIC SEX SCENES IS LIKE "DON'T HAVE SHAME MAKE YOU HIDE THINGS" BUT IT STILL FELT LIKE A WEIRD BOOK TO HAVE A BUNCH OF SEX SCENES IN. ALSO IT WAS A BOOK THAT SEEMED TO HAVE ZERO IDEA HOW OLD KIDS ARE. IT WAS CLEARLY WRITING A MIDDLE SCHOOLER WHEN THE KID WAS IN KINDERGARDEN AND A TEEN WHEN THE KID WAS IN 3RD GRADE. LIKE I WON'T SAY NO 9 YEAR OLD HAS EVER SKIPPED CLASS TO SMOKE WEED WITH THEIR FRIENDS, BUT THAT IS NOT LIKE, THE THING A 3RD GRADER IS CAUSALLY DOING ON A WEEKDAY.
